More people say Petty because of all his victory's. In my opinion, Petty won all those races in a time when things weren't restricted as they are today. The more money you had, the better car you had. Most of the guys back then didn't have the money Petty did to have a car to compete with him. What's your thoughts?

Earnhardt was the better driver. It's just like you said when Petty won all his races and championships NASCAR was a totally different animal than what we have today. You are right about things not being as restricted as they are today.Everything today is regulated and inspected to try and make all things equal, that wasn't always the case. Also back then they ran races more than just on weekends they would run during the week and on weekends there was more opportunity to compile wins, also STP was making sure Petty had all the resources he needed.
By the time Earnhart came along everything had become super regulated to keep a level playing field,in addition to that all the other teams had reached a level that made it hard for anyone to dominate like Petty had.Petty without a doubt was a great driver but I think he comes up just a little shy when being compared to Dale Earnhardt Sr.

I think Earnhardt was better. I agree with what you say about Petty. He won as many races as he did because things weren't as restricted as they are now. He really didn't have to work that hard at a victory. Earnhardt had a lot more competition and really had to work harder at a victory. He did tie Petty for the most NASCAR Championships and I'm positive that if he were still alive today he would have surpassed Petty in championships. He was just an excellent driver.

I think that Earnhardt was the better driver. It seems to me that there were only a handful of drivers winning most of the races during Richard Petty's time as a driver. Earnhardt, on the other hand, faced some pretty stiff competition during his career.

Comparing the two based solely on the number of races isn't fair, which a lot of people do. During a good portion of Petty's career, they ran many more races per season. For Earnhardt, they didn't run nearly as many races, thus giving him less opportunity for victory.

I think their nicknames say it all! Petty was the King, like you said he had numerous victories! Earnhardt was the Intimidator, he won intimidating other drivers! Money into the car could have played a part, but he was a damn good driver! Although I see where you are coming from, my answer is Petty by far!

Petty was awesome in his day due to the fact that they allowed you to modify your car and there weren't the ridiculous specifications they have now so he is in a class by himself
However Earnhardt proved he could drive the same car as the next guy and win..
They are both top drivers and legends to me. I cannot compare them and Petty is also a very friendly guy

Well, out of the two I prefer Petty..
However, the King himself has even commented on Big E having the ability to have beat his record if the circumstances were right.
They were both great drivers, and they both raced at different times, and during both of their times it was a different world than what the other had raced..so it's hard to say which one you could call better. I think they'll always be two of the sports greatest, and to me I'd rather leave it at that than to try to compare them all the time.. ya know?? Petty will go down in history as the greatest b/c of his wins..and I doubt you'll see anyone touch that. Dale Sr will go down as being the Intimidator and setting records of his own..
Like I said.. two great drivers..

I'm a big DEI fan, but I think I'd have to say Petty. But Earnhardt had tougher competition than Petty did back in the day. So it's a dead heat maybe.

It is hard but I am going With Petty. He has the most wins. If Dale was still here I think he could have 201 wins and a least two more championships. Petty was smart on wearing his safty stuff. Dale would still be here if he had his hans device on.
