I was watching the news today and there was a report out that AOL decided to start giving out their software away for free. But for years I have been getting FREE AOL CD's. And free email and IM service is something else that they say they will give away... but I thought that they do this already. I have had an AIM account for a long time.. free of charge. Or is Ted Turner unaware of this?

They are giving away their email accounts for free. Before you had to have an AOL membership to get one of their email accounts. AIM has always been free.

Well, that's not exactly what they mean. And they are not going to be giving away their ISP service. They are going to be giving away free AOL accounts (presumably as opposed to AIM accounts) and free software suites (NOT the ISP software). What they mean exactly is unclear but I do know that they will be moving away from subscription based services and offer many things for free on an ad-supported platform. Stay tuned, it's bound to be interesting since they currently have 18 million customers and even if half of those cancel their subscriptions, they'll lose money unless those ads work out for them and I don't think they will. The end of AOL? You decide.

They are giving away their free aol.com email. This was previously available to only subscribers. AOL only gave free aim accounts.
