ADVICE:
People, no disrespect, but please don't give advice on issues you are not familiar with. This person isn't talking about a little zit here and there.
MYTH: You don't wash enough. Probably not true. Actually scrubbing and cleaning too much or with the wrong products can cause an increase in inflamations! Most acne is actually internal, not topical. The ONLY soap that I will use is Oil of Olay. Every other causes my skin to dry out and or get irritated.
MYTH: Chocolate milk causes acne. Umm.. no., if milk is the cause it doesn't matter if it's chocolate or regular.
MYTH: Take multivitamins. Actually many multis have ingreidents that can and will trigger acne. You should be careful on this one.
MYTH: Talk to your doctor, they'll help. Umm - not for me they didn't. I did my own research and trial and errors. Most doctors aren't even open to discussing YOUR solutions.. only theirs. They don't know your body as well as you do. Acne is unique.
What is ACNE? Hormones called androgens stimulate increased oil production. The oil is broken down into free fatty acids by bacterial enzymes, which causes skin inflammation and abnormal plugging of the oil glands and hair follicle. This in a nutshell is what acne is.
MY STORY: I have had severe acne since I was 13 or so. Got worse as I got closer to adulthood. I'm now in my early 30s. When I say severe, I'm talking cystic acne. Individual cysts the sizes of quarters to silver dollars. dozens at a time.
I went on accutane twice in my life. Will never do it again as I feel it has damaged my body in permanent ways. However, it did work. Without it, and under so much peer pressure regarding your looks - it's very possible I could not be here today. I am thankful for it. But I wouldn't recommend it. I am also thankful for those Retin-A topical products - I KNOW it helped lessen the amount of scars.
THE PROBLEM / CAUSE / or TRIGGER?: Honestly, this really sucks, BUT.. I did loads of research online .. and as the years go on .. I find this subject I'm about to discuss coming up more and more. Also when I was on the antibiotics such as tetrocyclin, etc., my first dermo. said stay away from dairy products all together.
To this day, if I eat ANY dairy.. milk, cheese, freaking any of it.. I will within a day or two to a week break out with acne. Usually it is cystic in nature.. not just little pimples.
If you go on google and type in dairy and acne.. you will find some web sites that discuss doctors and research that have proven that some sort of hormone in cows is triggering the acne in humans. Hence the reason you see even more and more people with acne now.. due to more and more hormones in cows.
DHT is the is the final item that triggers the oil making cells in our body. Many different hormones turn into DHT. Some have been confirmed, others not. But the one that has been confirmed .. it has to do with pregnant cows and enzymes.
Don't forget red meat.. can contain the same dairy enzymes/hormones as the milk! If I eat large amounts of red meat.. I will also break out.
To be all honest, I'd bet that LaRoche industries knows the key.. they just wouldn't release it because that'd mean no more sales of accutane.
So there may be other keys out there, but I'd say that if people that have acne cut out all dairy from their diet, that they'd see a huge decrease in the acne issues.
YOUR DERMATOLOGIST: Dermatologists (most) will say .. no dairy doesn't cause acne. After arguing for long periods of time .. with my current doctor.. she said.. well it is possible it may trigger it, but it's not the "cause". Makes me wonder if all the dermatologists actually know the facts, just that they don't want to tell the secret or else they'd run out of clients? Dunno.
I used to have a doctor .. he came over on a boat from Sweden with an open mind. We got along quite well. Unfortunately he retired a few years ago. So for now, I go to my new doctor and tell her what I want done, what drugs to give me.. and do my own research and trial and error.
Celebrities wouldn't be where they are now if they had acne problems.. they don't use proactive because it cures a severe acne like this person is talking about. They use it because they get $ for saying they use it.
Shelfish.. My body also has an intolerance to shellfish so I never eat it. My first derm. also did say stay away from it. I have seen reports about what foods to not eat.. They include: chocolate, carbonated beverages, seafood and iodine rich foods, milk products and caffeine.
None of these trigger my acne (well .. exception to the dairy ones) But they could trigger yours. Every body is different. That's why some people can drink a gallon of milk and not be affected, while I break out like an I don't know what!
Just remember, it won't change overnight. But I think diet is the key.. not all these blasted drugs.
EMAIL ME IF YOU LIKE! The best thing for people sometimes is being able to talk to somebody that is in the same boat. :)

If you’re looking for accurate acne information, best to see a dermatologist. Some people believe doctors are predisposed to take the easy way to deal with acne… prescription drugs. But, with many, this simplistic answer may not be the appropriate course of action. Some feel that such prescription drugs just treat the symposium and not the underlying cause. But, a local dermatologist is still your best starting point.
For me personally, I discovered a great informational acne treatment site. Not only is there good information/articles but I got their audio e-book and following it’s advice can now say that my acne is a thing of the past! Keep in mind, were all different and there are various types of acne, so what works for some may not be totally effective for all.
Bottom line, hang in there, you will get past this! Sincere best wishes and good luck.
Oh, by the way the site that helped me is:

Forget all that other stuff! Try this...
I used to get really bad acne and someone gave me a tip to start mixing epsom salts with my facial cleanser. My zits are pretty much gone now :) It's been a life saver! PLUS, epsom salts are super cheap... like $4 for a pound... so it doesn't cost much to try it.
Don't worry about measuring it or anything just take a mild cleanser (I use Aveeno or Cetaphil which you can get at any drug store) and either put the epsom salts in the cleanser... or wash your face and while it's wet take some of the salts and wet it down a little then rub it right on your face.
It's great for your skin, it doesn't dry mine out and isn't too harsh ;) In fact, it makes my skin feel soft... plus it's so cheap that I use it all over my body (it's similiar to what spas use).

Hon, it's not necessarily that it's not treatable, it's that either the conditon hasn't been properly/completely treated as it should be, or you havn't actually gotten the right treatment for your case. You should see your dermatologist and discuss this with him or her. People with severe acne have been treated, so it's not impossible to treat, it just takes finding the right treatment, then time, consistency, and patience.
Also, it's very important that you take care of your skin and body on a daily/weekly basis as follows (unless otherwise instructed by your dermatologist) - with skincare products recommended by your dermatologist.
You will need: Cleanser, Toner (or Astringent), Cotton Balls, Moisturizer, Mask (or Masque), Extractor (found at most beauty supply stores), and either a facial steamer or hand towel for steaming.
-Morning and night (before going to bed): cleanse, tone, and moisturize. For blackheads, clogged pores, etc. 2-3 times a week include steaming in these steps (in this order: cleanse, tone, steam, tone, moisturize).
-Once a week: cleanse, tone, steam, exfoliate, tone, *extractions, tone, mask, tone, moisturize.
*Don't begin doing extractions until you have been following all of the other steps for at least 2 weeks, so that the steaming will have caused the blackheads to begin to soften.
-How to: *
Cleanse -use a small amount and lather with water, apply using circular motions all over face and neck, repeat if you have makeup on
Tone - Squeeze a small amount onto the cottonball and wipe all over face and neck
Steam - for 10-15 minutes, use one of these methods - facial steamer, hold your face 3-5 inches above steaming water, or drape a hot towel over your face (leaving your nostrils and/or mouth exposed)
Exfoliate - follow the same steps as in cleansing, but don't repeat
Extractions - place the hoop (or eye) over the blemish (or blackhead) so that the blemish is in the center of the hoop, apply slight pressure and use rocking and rolling movements all around the blemish (don't use so much pressure that you create indentions or bruises on your skin), if and when the blockage comes out of the pore, wipe away with a cottonball that has been dampened with toner
Mask - apply mask evenly on face and neck, leave for 10-15 minutes, remove by draping a hot towel over your face, then wiping away
Moisturize - apply a small amount on face an neck and massage until it's absorbed
*In all of these steps, always avoid the eye area.
~VITAMINS/MINERALS, DIET, & EXCERCISE~
Each day, include a multivitamin for women and try to maintain a fairly healthy diet and exercise routine. Also see this site about vitamins and the skin: http://www.prevention.com/article/0,5778,s1-5-53-156-3879-1,00.html. If you take any of these vitamins in addition to your multivitamin, be sure you aren’t going over the recommended dosages.

one of the first things is to be sure you are not getting extra iodine... check your multi-vitamin and if it has iodine in it.. get rid of it! Women's One A Day with Iron has no iodine. you'll get all that you need from processed foods, soups, spagetti sauce etc. also stay away from shrimp and other shellfish as they are high in iodine... i swear this works.
and NO PICKING! i know it's hard but it just makes it worse and helps to cause scaring. good luck.
