The rules of Football were officialized in a meeting that took place in London in1863. Some of the participants on that meeting(led by the representatives of Rugby College) didn't agree with the rules specially with not being able to transport the ball with the hands and went on to form their own rules of what would be known as Rugby.
In 1869 Football arrived to the US but during the following 7 years American colleges favored the Rugby rules and American Football was developed from Rugby.
The first association of American Football was created in 1892, 29 years after the Football (soccer) Association was created.
So it is not 'suddenly' that people call Football, Football. It's been called like that for over 143 years.

What? Did you just crawl out of your Georgia trailer? Soccer is and has been called football by everyone else on earth. We're different, we invented American football (which other countries often refer to as "grid iron") and had to rename football to soccer so that we didn't confuse ourselves! The World Cup gets semi popular for the first time in America and you are arrogant to think they just now made this sh!t up? Sheesh.

Because the rest of the world calls soccer "football", and we call football "soccer", and then there's American football. But it shouldn't be called "football", because you don't play with your feet! You run, but in soccer, you actually are dribbling the ball, with your feet. If that makes sense.

Football (or what you gringos know as "soccer") was invented (and named) long before American Football. So start looking for another name for your sport. Better yet, stop wearing paddings and helmets and call it Rugby.
To Musicx: In italy football is not called soccer, the name is Calcio

Well everybody on the planet except Americans call it football, so, probably realising that Gridiron doesn't actually use the feet in connection with the ball, people are finally starting to call it football there as well!

The entire world calls the sport that you kick a ball with your foot "Football".
Only in the USA do we call a sport that you throw and carry a ball "Football".

Because European "football" or soccer existed before our "football". How much of our game of football actually involves the foot? A few seconds a game... dumb name for a dumb sport!

Everywhere else in the world "football" is what we call "soccer". No one else really cares about American football.
