I am worried about rumours that a CRT can cause cancer.

everything causes cancer dude, get used to it
you won't get cancer from your monitor, but from the radon you're breathing, the gamma rays you're exposed to and the toxic emissions of power plants and automobiles... hmm, also too much red meat... try not to have a coronary after reading this

I have never heard of this happening, and if it were possible a CAT (cathode ray tube) would also include your television set as well.
