Considering sliced bread came around early in the last century, after the wheel, automobile, airplane, etc. I'd have to say the microchip is the best invention since then, since it enables us to miniaturize machines and computers to a workable level for the average human. This includes items such as you mentioned, the iPod.

For me, it is a toss-up between indoor plumbing (I HATE those smelly plastic outdoor crappers) and the automobile so we can drive across the country in a few days instead of taking a horse and buggy a few years).

The reason is before this there was only sliced bread to put round your pepperami and now it comes ready wrapped in bread - utter complete genius

Probably plastic wrap because it preserves the bread so it doesen't dry out overnight.
