let tell you something before you take any over-the-counter medication:
1-acidity in long run cause the wall of the esophagus to replace its structure. the new structure is susseptible to cancer. so, if you are not young and suffer from a long term reflux of acid you'd better have your body examined by an gastroenterologist.

2- you need to know first what causes this acidity and how it affected your digestive tract. any ulcer? any unusal source of acid? etc. taking medications may mask the evoloving picture of a more serous condition.

3- we have several types of anti-acids in the market. the most effective ones in routine use is called proton pumb blockers and comes into different brands. some of them are over-the-counter and they are effective. you may ask the pharmacist to select one of them for you. remember the category: proton pump blocker and tell this to your pharmacist.

but in most cases and remember in most cases long term use of medications have several adverse effects. again in most cases patients get rid of acidity employing the following advices:
1- do not go to bed at least during the first hour after dinner. you need time for getting your stomach emptied and it takes at least one hour. otherwise all the acidic foodstuff come back up to your esophagus and burn its wall
2- do not use voluminous foods
3- break down your meal into at least 5 times a day
4-give up smoking and alcohol
5-reduce your weight to lower the pressure of the tummy. high pressure of your abdomen cause the foodstuff to go up to your esophagus. there is no anti-acid defence in your esophagus.

i hope this helps

First of all, there are certain foods you should be avoiding.
For example, caffeine, sodas, chocolate, tomatoes, coffee. There is more information on this website:

Also, try over the counter Prilosec. I love this stuff...but be warned, it takes about a week to make any real difference in the pain.

Good luck!
