divide the distance to the sun by the speed of light to get the time

I doubt that it is possible to know the distance without knowing the velocity. But assuming your teacher is correct, may be some indirect measurements were made, from solar eclipses and such that gave us a reasonable if not accurate value of the time taken to travel the distance from the sun to earth.
