These tips may help you:
(1) think "spearing the fish" with your hands as they enter the water; don't slap the water. Elbows must be higher than hands before entry. Hands must not cross your body's center line as they enter the water.

(2) hands must be shaped like a scoop or letter C as you grab the water under you.

(3) point your toes to the back of the pool like a ballerina BUT do not stiffen legs so as not to get cramps.

(4) do not hold your breath when you're face is below the water. EXHALE under water so that you will have fuller lungs when you inhale.

(5) try to swim horizontally with legs not dragging. Try looking down not forward while swimming, and develop strong core muscles (abs and back) so that you will have a rigid swimming posture.

(6) stretch before swimming and eat banana regularly for its potassium content. Stay fit. These will improve your chance of not getting cramps.

Videotape yourself swimming and then you will see what looks wrong with your stroke. Ask a friend who swims well to watch you swim, give advice.

Practice your kicking with a kickboard... do laps. Practice your arm strokes using those little paddle things that slip on your hand.... do you know what I mean? do laps slowly, concentrating on improving your stroke - not speed. Perfect your stroke and the speed will come later.
