the rule of thumb to follow with fashion; if you wore something the first time it "came out" (like hot pants shorts, platform sandals, mini skirts, gauchos, etc) then you are too old to wear them the second time around. you may think you look good in them & sure, you'll get no complaints from the guys, but your lady friends will tell you the truth - you are too old to wear that fashion. there are few things more subject to ridicule than a woman trying to dress years younger than she actually is -

You are obviously having some doubts about your sex appeal or desirability. You need some validation and approval from others. Too bad. If you work out and take care of yourself, you should just know that. And at the gym, you have the chance to dress in tight, revealing clothing to show off for others. Is your body image what defines you? Is a nice body all you have to offer to the world? with young girls, this may be the case because they have not been alive ling enough to accomplish much else. But you have experience with the world.
Your friends are concerned about this, and they know you have much more to offer. They don't want to see you make a fool of yourself.
There are some very flattering, sexy, and non-provacative outfits you could wear. Try wearing a pencil skirt with a boatneck, slleeveless top. Or wear loose fitting lycra skirts (they define your curves but don't stretch over them). Wear white or flesch- colored clothes. Make 'em wonder.....that's sexy!
Avoid anything tight, tattered, or short. These looks are not sexy, only trashy. What kind of image do you want to portray? Keep the skimpy stuff for the gym, where it's appropriate.
Guys don't really care what you wear, anyway. They only care about what it makes them think about. If you let it all hang out, they think about sex, and how easy you are. Everybody has sexuality, and for some, that's all they have. Hopefully you realize that you have much more....

OH HONEY! I don't even have to see you to imagine what the women are seeing. They are Right!!! No short-shorts after you're 30 years old. It's trashy. Men compliment anyone they think they might get sex from, and that's what you're getting from the men. The gals are not jealous, they're trying to help you put some class in your act. How about a nice mid-knee skirt with a small slit up the side? Haven't you realized that if you want to attract men or show yourself off you don't show ALL of what you have? You have to leave something to the imagination. Wear your hot pants at home....INSIDE! (by the way, I'm in my 50's and have great legs, but I stopped wearing shorts long ago)

Hi Dawn r
I agree that if you have the legs, wear them ....... at the beach or such like .... but not for shopping, etc. Have you heard the expression 'mutton done up as lamb'? I'm sure you will get my drift.
I'm 53 & still have legs as good as when I was 21 ... I wear short shorts when I'm gardening or at the beach .... around the pool .... But not for shopping. I liked the answer that men will like anything that spells SEX ...
It's much better to leave a little to the imagination .... much more tantalising .... you never see a four course meal being being served all at once ... One course at a time ...
Enjoy your short shorts ... especially if you have good legs ... Just remember to leave a little to the imagination & know that if you feel good about ourself, you won't need to flaunt what you have, it will oooze from every pore ....

Either your friend see something that your not seeing. You mite work out and stuff but some times thing that were cool when we were young are not cool when we get up in age. so leave the hot pants to the little girls and dress hot for you age. 40 is not old but it is to old to have people thinking your a s l u t leave that vision for the school girls.

Like 30 should be the cut off age. My mom is in her early 40s and she has always had a great body..and she can still wear decent clothes. But in my opinion, and I can understand how proud of your body you must feel, I've gone through drastic weight loss before and I'm now happy on the skinny side...But. You are older now. Wear them around your house....just not our for the world to see.

If you like the way they make you feel, then wear them until you feel disgusted in them. Why take the opinions of others that are probably jealous of your body looking so good. If they say you look like a slut in those pants, then you must still have the body for them. Go for it.

Girl I am with you. I am 42 and my little body is getting sexier and sexier. Do you girl. Enjoy. We are much sexier 40 somethings these days. Don't let other's envy get you down. I wouldn't go so far as to let my butt cheeks hang out, but short shorts are fine, show off those sexy legs.

short skirts and shorts should not be worn if you're over 35, no matter what kind of shape you're in. low rise and tight shorts or jeans should never be worn--period. then you seem too much like you're trying to look younger than you really are.

Personally I think you can never be too old if you look good in them.
I have seen some 18-Year olds ware them that make it difficult to keep from throwing up, they look so bad and are so fat. <--There should be a law against that!
Age has NOTHING to do with it.( course don't ware them to a PTA meeting. lol)
Your "women friends" just sound jealous to me.
