Having siblings.

Jealousy made worse by a lack of understanding or awareness from the parents.

We are very conscious of the potential for sibling rivalry, and even while the kids are so young we make sure that we do all we can so that neither of them feels that they are loved any more or less than the other.

Siblings

Genetic imperatives.

The parents have an equal genetic interest in promoting the welfare of all their offspring, but each individual offspring has a genetic interest in trying to obtain greater favor and resources from the parents. The conflict between the parents' idea of fair distribution of familial resources and the siblings' attempt to get a larger share results in sibling friction.

I doubt this will win best answer, but it IS the most comprehensive explanation.

The fights which happen among siblings is just one of the common natures of a human being. Eigther of them, i.e. the elder/younger brother or the elder/younger sister feels that majority of the attention and care is towards the other. This is the major reason, its just plain and simple jealousy. Humans are capitalists in nature, no one can deny this fact. Brothers or sisters fight because they believe that they think that their share will be snatched away by the other. This creates further problems in the future as well.

Attention, usually. Each of the siblings want to get a lot of the parents' affections and attention and it often times isn'tpossible for the parents who have busy schedules or have very active lifestyles. And siblings tend to get jealous of things that they don't have that the other has (this not only contends to material things, but also other things like looks, talent, achievments, etc.) and goes out of their way (often going beyond the line) to prove that they can do better than each other.

I think the biggest thing that contributes to it is competition. Brothers or sisters have to constantly compete against one another for attention and praise from their parents. Trying to outdo one another often leads to jealousy, which can then escalate into disagreements and fights.

I've heard that sisters who are relatively close in age are particularly prone to rivalry in this way...

ummm having more than one child...

One person said that it is a parent that gives them the need to have sibling problems. Not really... Children learn everything from their siblings... as far as social, behavior and how to handle bullies.

Kids are kids... they will fight whether or not you like it.

Younger siblings get hand-me-downs (more often than not)
Younger siblings are often thought to be "not loved as much as the older sibling".

Parents giving deferencial treatment to one sibling over the other, either by treating both kids the same and not playing to their strengths, or by downplaying one kid's more subtle strengths for the other kid's more noticeable ones.
