Quit on a bid? Do you mean cancel a bid that you've placed? NO. NO. NO. NO.

When you bid on an item, you click through two windows - one to place the bid, and one to confirm that you really, really want to bid and that you understand that by placing a bid, you may win and will have to pay the amount. If you had any questions for the seller, you should have asked before you placed the bid. Read the instructions for new eBayers first very carefully before you bid on anything again. Remember, you can always turn around and resell something if you change your mind (or pray that someone outbids you before you win!)

There is Bid Retraction, but there are only two legal scenarios in which you can use it: If you accidentally entered the wrong amount ($1000 instead of $10.00), you can retract, but you must immediately rebid the correct amount. You can also retract if the seller significantly changes the item description, but chances are that isn't the reason. Retractions for any other reason are not allowed.

A bid may be retracted (cancelled) by the buyer in some cases if the retraction meets the requirements of our Bid Retraction policy.

Note: There is no equivalent for bid retraction in Buy It Now listings, or for listings where the bidding has ended. Once you've confirmed your purchase, you are obligated to pay the seller. There is also no equivalent for bid retraction for item listings using the Best Offer feature.

Whether you can retract your bid or not depends on the following factors:

Why you are retracting your bid;

When your bid was placed and when the listing ends.

You can retract a bid or a Best Offer for the following reasons:

You make a typographical error and enter the wrong bid amount. For instance, you bid $99.50 instead of $9.95. If this occurs, enter the correct bid amount immediately after you retract your bid. If you do not place another bid, the retraction will be in violation of eBay's policy and could result in your suspension. Please review the retraction guidelines if you need to retract your bid.

The description of an item you have bid on changed significantly after you placed your bid.

You cannot contact the seller. This means that you tried to call the seller, but his or her phone number doesn't work, or that you have tried emailing a message to the seller and it comes back undeliverable.

You can withdraw your bid, but it's a black mark on your Ebay record. You can withdraw if someone hacked your account, you mistyped the price you were willing to pay, the description changed drastically since you first bid, or the seller cannot be contacted. But I wouldn't do it if the item isn't very pricey, not worth the hassle. Finally, the seller can cancel your bid if they are willing.

If there is still time left on the auction, yes you can. Once the bidding has ended, you have to pay. You could write the owner and ask for an extension or just bite the bullet and tell them you changed your mind. They will be upset, probably leave you bad feedback, but you can get out of it. Remember, selling on e-bay is not free. They had to pay a price to sell their items. If you dont pay, they get stuick with the fee and their stuff.

You can rescind a bid before the auction comes to an end.

After that, you're on the hook.
