I am sooo late in paying for my registration, in was due in May, but when I took my car in it failed! The mechanic said it passed everything but the computer part of it. so he said "put 1,000 miles on it" and bring it back to me for a retest. So I did that, but took it to someone else, it failed again, so the guy didn't charge me. It's been about a month, what should I do now??

it is a 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage, automatic. He said that since there was a check engine light on a few months back, that it needed time to get that cleared, thats why he told me to drive it around. but the check engine light has been off since march of this year. I have tested it May 06, and July 06.

Couple of things you can try...

Take the negative cable loose from you battery for 30 minute or so. That will clear and reset the computer. Then hook it back up and immediately try to get it inspected. Sometimes that works.

You can also take you car to the local parts stor and get them to use their hand held to tell you what your trouble codes mean.

If its an emission issue, try buying a bottle of GTP (Guaranteed to Pass" from the parts store or Wal Mart.

I have a '91 car with 238,000 miles on it and I do the GTP thing every year and pass with flying colors.

What's the make, model and how old is the car? how many miles do you have on it? How much money would you be willing to put into repairs? These questions are needed to answer most questions on this site.

Which state did you fail in? Check that state's website for smog test. Sometimes they list authorized mechanics for getting your car into passing condition.

Might need a new catalytic converter. Doesn't make sense to "put 1000 miles on it", what was that supposed to accomplish?

Can you tell us your region/City?
What were the readout codes for the "computer" part of it?
We will need details in order to perform a proper diagnostics.
