Sometimes the screen goes all blue and there's a lot of text that is white... the blue screen flashes too quickly to read much, but I have noticed something with the USB driver? I looked at my device manager and here's what it looks like (i'm not sure if it's supposed to look like this or what?):

Universal Serial Bus controllers
-NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller
-NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller
-Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
-Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
-Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
-USB Composite Device
-USB Root Hub

Okay just to give more info... it's only a few months old, i've had Norton Internet Security installed since the very beginning... I have a progam that checks for adware and spyware... and although there was stuff on it, there isn't now.

I have the laptop sitting on an incline (i have it on something that sets it at 45 degree angle and has holes in it to let it vent, so air should be getting underneath it). It happened not long after we got the laptop so we took it to circuit city... and since they have a faster connection we downloaded a lot of updates (even thought at the time we had the laptop only a week). It was better after that... but has progressively started up again and gotten worse.

Now when it restarts it seems to take forever to get to the welcome screen when it was not really a huge hassle to restart before...

I will look more at all the suggestions though. Thanks! The blue screen of death sounds... horrible to say the least though!

re-installing the USB drivers for your motherboard, as it might be them causing the problem. ... waste money to buy something new for this computer as I'm

Hmm... I wonder what could be causing that?

I guess you could try re-installing the USB drivers for your motherboard, as it might be them causing the problem. Control Panel, System, Device Manager, going down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers, and try to update them.

You might have got a CD with the mothboard which you could try installing again for USB functionality.

I guess also it could be to do with a device, so one way of checking this would be to remove them all one by one, to see if it carries on working, and if so, replace that component.

what u have reported is called as bsd ( blue screen of death) in computer lingo.it happens because of following any one or all of the reasons , but remember this is only a limited list because you didnot provide your system configuration :
1> any newly installed hardware that is incompatible to the system previous hardware configuration. or whose drivers are not correctly installed .it can be also a usb device that disfunctions in between of any process .
2> any newly installed software that the system cant handle and is unable to thread the data requests .
3> corrupt system files or
4> attack of a virus
many of these occur due to computer not able to handle data requests and starts dumping physical memory to the particular process.
WHAT YOU HAVE REPORTED is just the configuration of the system ( usb devices to be precise) it has nothing to do with the error.
to solve the problem u shud try to do the following:
a] unistall any of the new hardware or software( provided u can boot into windows )
b] or try restoring back the system to a date u believe the system to running at its best. accessories>system tools> system restore.
Try restoring in the safe mode; that will be more better. for safe mode press f8 after the bios screen and choose "safe mode" in the menu.
c] u can run system file checker that will replace any corrupt files .for doing that go to command prompt ( run> type command) and then type sfc/scannow . also u have to insert the windows cd in the cd drive for that.
d> run any antivirus program if u wish to eliminate any possible virus attack.
again i will like to add that if u can be more specific in reporting ur problem it will be of great help
thanks and hope u got what u were looking for

That doesn't look abnormal, unless you have either question marks or exclamation points next to any of theses you have listed, they are fine. I don't know what everyone else here is seeing that is a problem. Go to Event Viewer (right click on My Computer and click on Manage and then on Event Viewer in the console) and look through the logs for errors to help determine what is causing the shutdowns.

I'm not joking here... it sounds like you got the dreaded 'blue screen of death'.

These links will explain it and help resolve the issue.

You may want to get a registry cleaning program if you continue to experience this problem. I've got one called Registry Cleaner. While it was about $25 I never have seen the blue screen of death since.

Hope this helps and have a great day!!!!

Try turning off USB components like the scanner Before you turn off your computer.

It is more likely to be overheating. USB controllers wouldn't normally cause your PC to close down.

It looks like it is time for you to reinstall your Operating System and get an anti-virus program.

you might be over heating your computer. keep it in a well ventilated area, or keep an extra fan behind it.

there could also be a virus on your computer (equally as likely). microsoft, symantec, mcaffee, and others all provide good virus cleaners. i prefer microsoft's windows one care live.
