Is it possible for a twin pregnancy to be missed during an early (7 weeks)ultrasound?

Yes.

Normally the scan is done at 12 weeks as this gives a better definition of the foetus.

At 7 weeks, it is much harder to discern the characteristics of the foetus.

Yes although I'm not sure how common it is. Most of the people I know who are expecting twins had it detected on an early scan.

But at a very early date in your pregnancy it might be possible to miss one of the embryos on a scan, especially if they are very small or positioned one behind the other.

I didn't learn I was having twins until I was three months along. So it is possible. Oh, and the doctor assured I was having a two girls. Half way through, I learned it was a boy and a girl. My mom-in-law prayed, my whole pregnancy, for two boys. When I finally gave birth, against all odds, and against all ultrasounds... it was two boys.

It's a possibility because there have been doctors telling women they are having girls and are having boys. So it's possible they missed it or you may not be having twins at all.

absolutely! and in fact its nearly always missed at this stage!! it will be found later though if it is a twin pregnancy. If you are worried about it tell you doctor and arrange for another one they may pick up on it if they look hard enough!!
