The best, IMHO, is "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," by the Rolling Stones. There are several things which qualify it as a great rock song.

First of all, it comes from the "classic rock" era. It came out in 1965, as music as we know it was undergoing a huge upheaval, mostly due to four lads from Liverpool, England, who went on to shake the world. The musical changes occurring from the years 1964-1970 were unbelievable.

Second, it's a very simple song, as any good rock song should be. It's driven by a ridiculously simple fuzzed-out bass line, with classic blues-driven guitar filling in, and is fairly repetitive in its verse/chorus/verse model. Also, it features another classic quality of any good rock song - the sneering, thumbing his nose at the establishment vocal delivery that Mick Jagger had *so* down back then. When Mick sings "and I'm tryin' to make some girl," anyone with daughters at the time were locking them up.

Thirdly, it had the all-important quality of scaring parents. To hear it told, parents were more upset by these five English kids than modern parents were of Eminem. They weren't the lovable moptops that the Beatles were - in fact, they were something of an Anti-Beatles, with their sullen stares and moodier music. The deliberately anti-grammatical line with the double negative "I can't get no" proceeded to irritate English teachers and grammarians far and wide, and led to declarations (not the first, and certainly not the last) that youth culture was totally in the toilet, and that the new generation would amount to absolutely nothing.

Lastly, it references that all-important subject of any good rock song, sexuality. The song itself is a paen to sexual frustration, at least in part, and, as any teenager knows, any references to sex in songs does two things instantly: 1) it ensures that parents will not appropriate the song and make it embarrassingly one of "theirs," and 2) the coolness cred gets pumped up by a factor of ten.

These qualities make "Satisfaction" the best rock and roll song.

There are much better songs. I don't really care for Queen. I would suggest Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Van Halen. These are my favorite bands. These people = true musicians. The Rolling Stones are great too.

Each of them has so many good songs. Its not like they had two good songs and then disappeared.

Check out Eddie Van Halen's Guitar Solo from the Live Right Here Right Now DVD. Amazing!!!! Its like 13 mins. He just sits down on stage and plays his guitar.

I love live stuff because of all the improvisation.

I'm hoping to turn you into a rocker!!!!!!!!!!!
