I think it's a Greek myth. Some hero has to go and save some woman from Hades, but as he's going, he's told that he cannot look back at her. But he does, or something? Sorry for the vagueness.

Orpheus' wife Eurydice died and was taken to the underworld. He missed her so much, that he persuaded Hades to let her live again. Hades agreed on one condition: Orpheus was not to look back at Eurydice while walking back up to the surface. He readily started out, but then started having some doubts about the deal. He couldn't take it anymore, so he looked over his shoulder and saw Eurydice being whisked back down by Hermes. She was following him the whole time. But the idiot just had to look, didn't he?

The story is of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice was Orpheus's wife. He used his skill of song and lyre playing to convince Persephone and Hades to give her back to him. He was granted with the condition that he would not look at her until he reached the surface. However, his own emotions got the best of him and he lost her. He then spent his days with no other woman, until he and Eurydice were reunited on the other side. This link should have all the information you need.

That is the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Orpheus was permitted by the god of the undeworld to rescue his beloved from death, but told that he could not look back to see if she was following him as he ascended to the upper world.

also sounds similar to the story of Lot's wife looking back at Soddom and Gommorah and being turned into a pillar of salt.
