I understand the Valliant are good & reliable. Not sure about condensing boilers? Something around £1000- £1200

Valliant are one of the best combi boilers on the market. If you are in England you will have to look at condensing boilers due to new efficiency regs. This is not a bad thing since the price of gas has shot up a good band 'A' condenser will save you money.

The down side with Valliant is that they are expensive, but they are top of the range, you should look at an Valliant Ecomax. If installed correctly this should be an outstanding boiler.

For a good mid-range boiler go for Worcester Bosch, these are my prefered boiler as I fit them all the time and never get any problems. Have a look at their Greenstar range.

When selecting a combi have a look at the KW rating, they usually go from 24KW to 28KW to 30/35KW the difference is that the higher the KW output the better flowrate you get from the hot tap and the more rads you can heat, but it's primarily for flowrate.

For an average sized house with two bathrooms a 28KW boiler should do the trick for anything larger you'd have to step up to 30/35KW. The 24KW boilers are really only good for small houses and flats

Hope that helps you out some...

Oh and the electricity generating boiler (microgeneration) is ok but wont generate enough power to sell back to the grid, will only cut your leccy bill a bit. So don't be thinking you can power the street using it, in reality it might do your tv and a couple of lights.

Worcester Bosch are good. I got one 6 weeks ago. It replaced the previous Worcester which was over 20 years old.

Whatever you do, MAKE SURE it is a "condensing" boiler because these are the most efficient beyond a doubt and energy costs are going to keep going up and up. Gas will be a luxury commodity in the not too distant future so it's worth spending a little extra on a condensing boiler.

Don't leave the decision up to the installer, they will just fit whatever they have lying about their yard and whatever they can make the most profit on.

Both Bosche and Valiant boilers are good. All new boilers have to be condensing boilers now because of new regulations.

All new boilers should now be condensing type. Existing propeties can still get away without in difficult situations though.

My Vaillant is still good after 16 years, I would like to change to a condensing model soon, also Vaillant. Bosch is good though.

The best system to go for is called CHP (combined heat and power) where you sell back excess energy to your supplier.

Get one of those that recycle the wasted heat and turns it into electricity ... that you sell back to the national grid.
