My husband is African, and he is not violent at all. Men and women have different kinds of relationships in Africa, so the dynamics aren't the same. Women are very independent in my husband's culture, though they don't have the same social rights as men do. Men who hit their wives in my husband's culture would be considered poor managers of their passions, their wife, their lives, etc. It would be a shameful thing, less, I believe, because the right of the woman would be violated, but more because it would be an embarrassing display of loss of control on the part of the man.

First of all, violence against women is not 'legislated' anywhere in the world. As for men being allowed to hit (sic) their women in Africa...forget. Since African societies have largely been parternal, like in most other animal kingdoms, this illegal trait has been wielded widely by males. In certain societies where hitting a woman was 'allowed',say like among the Kikuyus of Kenya, it was only limited to the 'bedroom'. It was unacceptable to hit a woman in public. And a man was not allowed to sprint after a wife if she made her escape out of the 'bedroom'.
Ultimately, however,it is a question of muscle,as Kikuyu men once learnt under the legendry feminine ruler, Wangu wa Makeri, whose reign (and that of her female kitchen cabinet members) only came to an end when the men decided to impregnate them and exploited the 'heavy' situation. Wangu and co. were mean. And violent.

Yes, but I think there should be a law for women to hit (and kill) the men who hit them.

Yes. This is what that particular culture sees as the norm. Different cultures have different ways of doing things. If you can believe it, their are actually some tribes where it is normal to eat each other. By western standards, this is totally intolerable, but in other places I guess that's their problem because that's really gross.
