There are many different areas of psychology, including psychologists who teach, do research, etc. The branchs that do clinical work (counseling and psychotherapy) are Clinical Psy and Counseling Psy. To find a counselor look for someone who is licensed as a psychologist, professional counselor or maybe a marriage & family therapist. Then you should always ask about whether they have experience with your particular concerns, what are their ideas about therapy, etc.

Not all psychologists focus on the past, by the way. There are different approaches and today they are just as likely to focus on present choices and behaviors -- although of course your present state is always going to be influenced by the past so it is often necessary to look there!

Psychologists usually evaluate our past. They try to find out the reasons for a particular behaviour. What are the various factors that are influencing and how to decrease their impact. they discard the unwanted trait within us and let us get back to a normal and happy life.

However, the procedure mainly depends upon with what problem we are going to them. It may be to relieve ourselves from any mental strain or to get away from some habit or to control the fear or phobia of something and so on ... they analyse the reasons for that behaviour and separate it from us.
