It used to be before everyone started going on about immigrants and totally forgetting how Chavs are dragging our society and culture through the gutter.
You will see 100 criminal chavs sponging off the state with their hands down their tracksuit bottoms before you see one immigrant.
The problem with britain not being great anymore is in our own backyard, the lack of respect and lawlessness that kids today are demonstrating is 1000 times worse than an immigration problem you've only see on telly.
Wake up all of you!

Yep, it sure is. Great Britain has a very robust history, and has contributed greatly to progress. It sets a commendable moral conduct seeking the betterment and longevity of the world at large. It's not afraid to stand up for justice whether that means fighting against terrorism, protecting Lebanese families from Israeli bombs, combating hunger in Africa, preserving a global environment, or pumping out some really jammin' music.
The food, however, is only fairly good. That's why we don't call the country Excellent Britain.

The 'Great' in the title 'Great Britain' has a meaning similar to 'Greater' as in Greater London, Greater Manchester or suchlike. It wasn't supposed to mean great in the superlative sense (though they probably liked that connotation).
To answer your question more directly, I think the historical periods we normally consider our greatest - Elizabethian through Edwardian - saw the country as an important player in the world, and was marked by many fantastic contributions to humanity - philosophical, political and technological. Notwithstanding, it was also a period of ruthless exploitation of ordinary indigenous people, as well as the peoples and resources of "almost a quarter of the globe". Britain now is a generally decent place to live - but I think we need to acknowledge that past is gone and stop trying to live up to it. I believe a different kind of greatness - one not requiring massive military power and an empire - is worth striving for, and if we recognise this we may be able to eclipse our past with an even more important future.

Of course it is Great. We have the best art, music, food, innovations, entrpreneurs, currency, standards, politicians, comedians, footballers and too many other things to mention. And all this on a tiny Island. We may no longer rule an empire and we have lost the notion of who we are because of alliances and our ability to champion the under dog. But we have always been Great and always will be. Who else is there to compete? Nobody.

Great Britain is greater than Brittany area in France. That's the reason why it is called GB, not because of it's colonial past or achievements. For this geographical reason, yes, it is great.

I thought it was great when I was there in 1996 but it was a little expensive then so I'm sure it would be more expensive now. The taxis stop running at midnight or 1 a.m. so if you are out at a bar make sure you have a ride home, or leave early.

Not as great as it use to be. The term comes from their past rulership over some many countries and colonies around the world that Britian was also called "the land where the sun never sets". (It's similar to the U.S. having control of Puerto Rico). Many of those countries now are independent of England, so it's not as "Great" as it use to be.
