yes my mother in law did the same thing last year, did you drain the petrol tank straight away?

It can damage the engine but it depends on how much petrol you put in relative to the amount of diesel. If there is only a small concentration of petrol you might get away with it. THe best thing to do though is not start the engine and have the tank drained. I know that you cannot put diesel in a petrol car due to the size of the nozzle but that doesn't prevent this mistake from happening. Perhaps the Nozzles (and the filler holes in cars) need to different shapes?

No, it wont. Diesel engines are much stronger than petrol and are designed for higher compression. Also as ther is no spark then petrol wont exploed under pressure inthe same way deisel does.
So, to fix... hard way... take out tank, flush it through, remove all filters and replace, flush all pipelines, remove and clean all injectors.. put it all back together.
Easy fix... this depends on car.. but remove fuel line from the spill rail in engine bay. This is where the fuel line ends up after leaving the tank. Find +ve on the fuel pump. Connect +ve to a 12volt power supply. This will run the fuel pump. Empty tank via fuel line into a suitable container....... dispose of sensibly.
Once empty, put in some diesel... run fuel pump till diesel comes out of line. re attach to spill rail/common rail and start car.
if its a Peugeot the +ve is the blue wire uber the rear seat cushion.

Yep! the diesel acts as a lubricant as well as fuel within certain parts of the injection system.Petrol on the other hand has no lubricating propertys. diesel is a compression fuel so your engine runs at a higher compression ratio than a petrol so if you put petrol in a diesel it will wearout parts in the injection system and also it will knock extremely loudly before destroying itself in a cloud of smoke!!!
Turn it off, call a mechanic and do some overtime your going to need the money! sorry

DO NOT TRY TO RUN THE ENGINE!!!! It will blow the head off the engine.
You're going to have to drain and clean the gas tank and purge the fuel lines and injectors. Even a little gasoline in a diesel can cause a lot of very expensive damage.

You will need to drain it out immediately. It is not as bad as the other way round. Putting diesel into a petrol engine is far worse and causes more damage.
I did the same and drove it as well. Called AA and had to have it drained, once it was out and I had filled it it was fine.
Once drained fill your car up and fill it up again when it gets to three quarters and it will be fine.

it could injury the engine besides the undeniable fact that it relies upon on how plenty petrol you put in relative to the quantity of diesel. If there is in basic terms a small concentration of petrol you may escape with it. the terrific situation to do however isn't initiate the engine and characteristic the tank drained. i be responsive to which you would be able to't placed diesel in a petroleum motor vehicle with the aid of scale of the nozzle yet that doesn't avert this errors from occurring. in keeping with possibility the Nozzles (and the filler holes in automobiles) ought to distinctive shapes?

That depends.
How old is the car?
What type of injection system does the engine have?
Did you start the engine? If so, how long did you run it for.
An older car, with mechanical distributor-pump indirect injection will probably survive a few minutes running with just a little bit of extra wear.
A newer car, with high-pressure common-rail direct injection will probably have damaged pumps and injectors after only a few seconds running, due to their closer tolerances and higher pressures.

Not if it's a very small amount
Like less than 1/2 gal.
We used to add petro to diesel trucks to help clean the injectors.
With 100 gals of diesel we would add 2 gals of petro
But not at every fill up
If you added more than 2 gals than your car may not even run,if it does keep adding diesel to your tank until the fuel has been burnt
every time you go for a ride top the tank off.

depends how old your car is... older cars are much more tolerant of this, because the engines are not are highly tunned, however deisel can tolerate 20% of petrol. I personally would just fill the tank full of desiels and see how it goes- getting it pumped costs alot!

yes but if you drain it straight away and fill up the car with diesel, the car should run okay... I did this once, filled it to the neck with petrol, drove it for 10 miles until it conked out... The mechanic simply drained the petrol out and filled it up with diesel and hey presto, no probs... is it an old car ot relatively new?
