I am aware that people from wales call themselves welsh, from scotland scottish etc. I simply wondered why the preference differs between that and saying british.

I was born in England, which means that i am English. England just happens to be a country forming part of the United Kingdon of Great Britain & Northern Ireland. People should class themselves as the nationality of which they were born i.e Scotland - Scottish, Wales - Welsh. You can't stop people being patriotic about there own country. The union of The United Kingdom was formed to give a 'common ground' after we all stopped having wars with each other. Although that doesn't mean to say that we all like each other! Most though I think, do get on!

I say British....

I do this because I don't see us as disparate countries, I see them as regions that form the same country, Great Britain. I think if wales, scotland, n.ireland & england were seperated, we would all be lost within europe and cease to exist on in world affairs. We have been united for centuries, we speak the same language (for the most part!), enjoy the same laws, govt., education, health care, military protection, etc... We would only be less as different parts, this is what I really believe, each part of the British Isles (theres another name for ya) makes up Britain, and it would not be complete without any part of it.

I'm British. I was born in England, I have grandparents from Southern Ireland, (although they're not part of the UK). I'm in the RAF, so I work to defend the Entire nation, not just England.

I find that people who deny the unity of our nation to be annoying. I've got mates who fly St George/St Andrew/Welsh Flags and call themselves a member of those respective Nations. I fly a Union Flag. Not a St. George cross. We're not seperate Nations, we are one Nation, working together for the same future. Some people say that they find it irritating when they see a Welsh/St Andrew's flag in England (usually the ones who have St George's flags up). I find it irritating when people put St Georges flags up alone. If I put a St. George flag up, there would have to be a Union Flag next to it. The World cup season especially annoys me, with people putting those little flags on their cars.

I'm British, and I live in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

British means you are from Wales, Scotland or England.
English means you are from England
We have two flags One with red, white and blue for Great Britain and the George cross flag which is red and white for England only.

In Wales they have the Red Dragon
and Scotland Dark blue and white.

I hope this helps you? I live in England and therefore class myself English but if you live in Great Britian i.e. Wales or Scotland you also may say you are from Great Britian. You wouldn't say you are English if you are from Wales or Scotland.

Wales say Welsh
Scotland say Scotish

ok

Hello

I class myself as English. I don't come from Wales so I'm not Welsh. Great Britain includes Wales/Scotland etc.

I'm British AND Welsh! I've spent most of my life in Wales so I feel Welsh and British because we are part of Britain. I don't think I'll ever feel European though!

Great Britain is also the United Kingdom but we can't say we are Kingdish as is sound stupid, Within the United Kingdon are four countries, England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales so depending from what country you were born is where you are from

Well its not something I think about too much , but if asked I usually reply English , though I often still in the broader sense of things I still reply to our country as England and mean the UK,but people seem to be so hung up with their separate countries that I usually have to clarify which part .
In one way I don't see the fuss we are people, but on the other its nice to have a heritage you can be fiercely proud of , though as someone who is simply English , all I seem to have is to be constantly trying to prove that not all English are beer swilling louts abroad and that some of us are half way decent people .
Other than that if pushed I would say British.

Depends on the reason. I am British through and through, Welsh, Scottish and Irish have their own identity and culture, English do not.
