My husband's nephew is turning one this month. I need ideas on something to get him. I don't know if he walks yet and I also have to ship whatever we get him to Canada so it can't be too big. Any suggestions?

BEST GIFT EVER!!!! Leap frogs fridge farm magnet set. It has a 'base' that sticks to the fridge and common animals (cow, sheep, ets) that are in half that stick to the 'base' when the child matches them correctly, they are rewarded with the animal sound and a silly song. Will keep kids entertained for HOURS while mom is cooking or what ever and is less than $20 and small and light (thus easily shipped) YOu can also order from Toyrus.com and have it shipped directly to him along with a birthday greeting. I LOVED this toy!!!!

Board Books
Stuffed Animals
Anything He can push like grocery carts, etc.
Blocks
Baby Einstein DVDs
Wooden Puzzles
Small balls
Clothes
Bubbles
Tubby Toys
Coloring stuff (I recommend the Color wonder markers or washable crayons)

Just a few ideas, I dont have a boy that age but I do have two girls ages 3 and 2 and another girl on the way in October. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

I don't think I would get clothes for a 1-year old, because it's more of a present for parents than the child himself (he doesn't care yet what he wears). If you want to please the parents, clothes is a good idea (except here you can run into a situation where you find something that you think is cute, but the parents don't). If you want to please the child, all 1-year olds like bright toys that make sounds. Just pick something that is labeled for his age (under 3). Or if you don't want to spend money on shipping, you could send some kind of a gift card (or one of those Visa debit cards that can be used anywhere), then parents can just go and pick something out for him...

How about a savings bond? At one, they probably have a lot of toys and don't need anything else. He's probably set on clothing too.

You could also set up an account with a 529 college fund.

Right now, he won't actually realize what he is getting for his birthday, but when he gets older he will and you can send a little something along with an addition to the college fun or savings bonds.

If there's a Toys R Us (or even a Zellers) near where you live you can find all sorts of stimulating colorful toys which make sounds for your nephew. Trust me, when you get out there, you're spoiled for choice. There's an ABC Elmo he might enjoy or a Winnie the Pooh Bear which reads stories to the children. TONS of choice.

I hope you don't get searched trying to cross the Canadian border as it's not as easy to get into Canada as it once was. j

As for something small, I would say board books or pop up books or some toy that plays music. You, too, can't go wrong with clothes. They pack well and don't take up too much room. Or how about sippie cups or a set of toddler dinnerware? Since this little boy is turning one, he's going to be self-feeding soon.

Get him a dress me up toy, like they have Mickey Mouse and nowadays probably a Bob the Builder or a Cailou (boy child characters). I have a video of my daughter opening her 1st birthday presents and from the moment she saw her Dress Me Up Minnie she was lovestruck! Plus she learned to button, snap, zip and pull on, pull off. Good toy plus it is light and pretty inexpensive.

My little advice is to buy them a picture frame because they will need some extra frames for wedding pictures. Also write them a nice poem since they are your teachers. And wish them a hearty mazel tov from all of us at YA.

Buy him clothes. Toys are bulky and I am sure they have enough. If you do not know what size, I would go for something like overalls at the 2T size because they fit in most seasons. If it doesn't fit now it will.
