Bipolar Disorder (previously known as manic-depressive disorder) is characterized by highs (mania) and lows (depression). The cycles can last several days or several weeks (rarely cycling within the same day). Its more severe than just mood swings. People with mania have a decreased need for sleep. Its like they are running on an infinite battery. They'll start projects they never finish. They may be arrogant and mean. They may be angry and impulsive (like drinking or going on shopping sprees). Some people become hypersexual. They may talk quickly or just seem very hyperactive. So, when they cycle into the depressive phase, you can understand why its such a crash. People with Bipolar have Major Depressive Episodes. This may include feeling suicidal, being unable to get out of bed, not eating or sleeping, not going to work or school, just seeming run down, or not talking to others.
So, basically, you can have depression without Bipolar, but you can't have Bipolar without depression.

The most simple term to describe bipolar and depression is that people who has this disorder has extreme mood swings. The mood swings shifted from manic (a very high feeling) to really low moods. Some has episodes faster than everyone else, i.e every few hours or days. And some has it a bit slower, which will happen every other month or years.

IN simple terms, there's "lows" (depression) and then there's also periods of the exact opposite instead of just "normal" in between. So, like...someone with depression will have a depressive episode for 6 to 8 months, and when they come out of it, they're functioning at a pretty normal capacity. A bipolar person will have hypomanic "high" episodes in which they sleep less, take on multiple tasks etc.

Depression has you in a deep low all the time. Bipolar has you swinging back & forth between deep lows and manic highs.

Depression is probably what you think it is, being upset and sad.
Bipolar is when you go from depression to extreme happy stages and back. With Bipolar there are 'highs' and 'lows', unlike depression which just has 'lows'.

Bipolar is when you feel happy then sad and you get really mad and violent I know because my sister has it. Depression is when you are sad and it could be from plenty of things. People usually do get them mixed up, but that's how I explain them
