I believe I am in need of an anti-depressant. I have been battleing depression for a long time, even attempted suicide. I don't like the idea of depending on medication, but I want to be happy, and normal. Any suggestions of medication would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much

FYI-I have been seeing a mental health professional for a year, since my suicide attempt. He suggested I go to an MD for the medication, I am just very afraid of the side effects.

It may be a "trail & error" situation.
Everyone's body chemistry is different.
They all have dise affects, you must work closely with your doctor to determine what is best for you. Be honest about how the meds. make you feel as to find the best match for your needs.

There are alot of them out there on the market. You need to go to a psychiatrist - they're the only ones who can prescribe them. And the two of you work it out together. And unfortunately it may be a rather long process. It takes several months to know if one is right or wrong. Make sure there's no way simple counseling will work for your depression before you start in on the meds, because ALL of the anti-depressants have medical side-effects.

If u don't like the idea of depending on medication, then anti-depressants are not right for you. Taking a pill is not an answer to your depression, its a quick fix which will make things worse by suppressing your immune system and making u a apathetic, blank person. Start thinking positive, take care of your body and your health, and try searching for natural alternatives to anti-depressants over the internet.

Look, the first thing I always say is that Yahoo Answers is not the place to be asking questions concerning medical situations. Your doctor is the person you should ask not some invisible person on the other end of a computer who can dispense any type of information (good or bad) that he/she wants. My suggestion to overcome depression is to go shopping, have a nice night out on the town, see a movie, see a play, do something different. Those things don't hurt your body only enrich your soul for your body GO TO A DOCTOR......

I have taken welbutrin and effexor
effexor works better for severe depression, it had some nausea and constipation at first, and it make my breasts get larger (very rare side effect). The effects went away after a few weeks (except my breasts) But it totally killed my sex drive
That was really the only negative effect, everything else was perfect.
I switched to welbutrin because it has no sexual side effects, but it makes me anxious because I have ADD so now I have to get something new!
both have an anorexia side effect I think I have picked up

Prozac is the cheapest (patent expired in 1990s) anti-depressant out there. Plus, it stays in your system the longest... unlike the other ones, it actually is ok if you miss a dose every once in a while...

I have took Doxepin and Lexapro. I thought Lexapro was the best but it cost a lot if you don't have insurance. Doxepin is cheaper.
