Your internet will go as fast as your fastest modem. Dial up is slow. Size of files has increased quite a bit since the dial-up days, so I highly recommend you look into a cable/DSL connection. Good Luck

The best thing you can do is to clean up your lines. A dedicated shielded cable back to the telephone companies point of entry to the building can help a lot. If you must share the line with telephone extensions, try to clean them up as well. Poor connections and jacks, exposed wiring and splices, & cheap telephones will all contribute to noise on the line. Your choice of ISP is also a big factor, you need to find one that works well in your area.

Can anybody suggest how to evaluate/diagnose the quality of the connection?

Is there an easy way to tap into the line where it comes into the house? If so, you could use one of those Internet speed-test sites to determine whether there is significant degradation in the house wiring. If so, you could reduce line noise (and thus increase speed) by isolating/repairing the problems.

If you want faster speed, get DSL or cable. Even with an accelerator installed to speed up the internet access, it still won't give you a noticable different.

You can get accelerators but they can only do so much. Nowadays, though you can get DSL for around $12.99 per month. Cheaper than some Dial Up services. Try Yahoo DSL...

web accelerator is basically the only thing you can have for dial up, it's just destined to be slow, get over it or get high speed

dial up is just slow anyway, try defragging your compter, also reduce the list of programs that run on startup, my bf did this to mine and it helped but then i just got broadband anyway
