I'm from a small town pretty much in the middle of nowhere where most of it's occupants are terrified of going to the city. They are afraid that if they happen to look someone in the face, even by accident that they will be gunned down. Now, on the flip side, a people have starting moving to our area (God help them) from the city to hopefully live better lives (yeah right, it's boring as sin here). Anyway, I've made friends with a few of the families and found that they are terrified of our wooded areas because they fear they will be mauled down by bears, bitten by snakes, or shot by the local rednecks (this one might actually occur, you know how these backwater people can be). What I find to be the most amusing of the whole situtation is people are afraid of stuff they have no real experience in, most likely these ideas were formed from tv or the movies. Heck, look at NYPD Blue or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I'm sure if I had any real concerns about death I might be leary about them.

This wasn't supposed to be that serious of a question. I find the irony of the situations amusing. It's kind of like watching Ma and Pa Kettle visiting their baby boy and girlfriend in the city, Ma tightly gripping her purse in fear of getting mugged with the girlfriend reassuring her it's alright. Next you have an image of sonny boy viisiting the old homestead in the middle of nowhere with his girlfriend who happens to have a death grip on him in fear of a big old grizzly bear thrashing thru the brush to get at her and sonny boy trying to comfort her in the same fashion.

I also live in a fairly small town about 45 minutes outside of a big city, and a lot of people from my town are terrified of going to the big city for the reasons that you said. It is very funny to me because I moved to the "big city" awhile back for about 2 years, and at first I was really scared, I guess because all those fears had been shoved down my throat for so long, but it wasn't long before I realized that people weren't actually stalking me and drive-by shooting don't occur on a daily basis LOL You are right, people are afraid of the things that they are ignorant about.

People are always afraid of what they haven't experienced, especially, as you say, the only things that they've heard about it are negative. Clue the new folks in, on what is real and what isn't (and how not to get shot by the rednecks, haha). Think what people in other countries must thing of the US based on what is seen in the media. sigh

I was born and raised in the Detroit metropolitan area, and now I live out near Amish country in Ohio...quite a change. I find it amusing that people who've never been to The Big City would think like that...typically as long as you mind your own business and don't dawdle in the left lane, you're fine. :)

2 Timothy 1:7-For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

I find it amusing but also kind of sad. It points to the fact that we need to educate eachother about eachother to promote tolerance and understanding.

THAT'S RIGHT.... people are afraid of what they don't know. That's all a fear really is.. not knowing. Why would you be afraid of something you DO have experience with?
