I am just asking becuase the other day I tpped someone HALF of what their service cost me. They asked me are you sure and I was like yeah but then I ralized what I had given them and didnt want to make them give me back the change. Let's just say I am very wary on tipping now. Also, how would you have handled it?

A buddy of mine is a waiter/waitresses dream because he has two specific attributes: he's pretty generous and is abysmal at math.

A couple of years ago, he and I were out for lunch. He gets some grilled chicken dish that ran him about $8. At settle up time, he hands the waiter a $20 and tells him to keep the change.

The waiter then literally skipped away.

I asked him if he had really intended to give him a 120% tip.

He said, "No, but there's nothing I can do about it now."

I just shook my head.

For me, I tip based on service not some formula of what people say I should. Say I have a 20 meal. If I ger a very good waitress who does her job well, and who is nice, I have no problem leaving a 7-10 dollar tip. At the same time if they are really bad, like crabby and mean, the ones who never check to see if everything is going ok of If i need anything else, I won't leave anything. If I get good service I tip well and if it is awful I don't. I just depends.

I would have taken the the loss ... you just made a server's whole day and reinstilled some margin of faith in the generosity of mankind. Just calculate 15% of the bill for acceptable service in the future.

I've been on both sides of the tips and I say if it was too much, let them keep it. It will probably make up for some idiot who left a huge mess and didn't tip anything. (been there)

NEVER.
becouse tips is a donation in view of his service howmuch he has made you happy. & there is no measure of happyness. so tips is equal to happyness & not measured by service. SO NO CHANCE OF OVER TIPPING
