Anyone remember the theme tune to the old Baretta TV show sung by Sammy Davis? The chorus said, "keep your eye on the sparrow when the going gets narrow." In this usage, is "sparrow" a slang term for something/one else? If so, what? Is it specifically African American/60's/NYC? Thanks.

Keep your eye on the sky, it's a reference towards God really. The sparrow flies high towards the heavens so if you keep your eye on it, it just means follow God and always worship him even when the road gets rough and you'll be ok.

in actuality the word was probably used b/c "the going gets tough" was not easily rhymed.
