Seeing as how they live in it too you'd think sooner or later the self preservation instinct would kick in and somebody would say ya know maybe dumping toxic waste in the river is not that great of an idea if we gotta drink out of it.
Plus even if they figure Well we'll just dump it in someone else's river the people who own said river may levy expensive fines on the company for polluting. Money spent paying fines, lawyers fees, and clean up is money that could have been better spent on other projects or profit that is not going in the owner's pocket.

Many a times it is the business who cause damage to the environment by not following strictly effluent treatments and throwing out packaging materials into the open. Besides, It is the concern of everyone to protect the environment including the Business. Every citizen of a country is entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the environment and business is no exception.

Because in a LOT of cases if they take a long term view to profit it makes good business sense.
Preventing ecological damage is almost always cheaper than cleaning it up after an accident and then facing government mandated restrictions.
Some developing countries are starting to realize that their natural resources are limited and are not willing to take short term profit at the cost of long term damage.
Quite honestly, don't depend on businesses to develop morals regarding the environment. The only real way to make them care is to make them care via their bottom line. This could be via bad press and boycotts, fines, getting shut out of potential markets because they aren't responsible. Businesses first and foremost responsibility (public ones at least) is to make money for their shareholders. In order to make them care about the environment, they need to have their business goals and societies environmental goals linked inextricably.

Business should be concerned with the environment because, even though corporations themselves are legal entities, they are still made up of real people and we all have to live on this planet. And I think we'd all like to live here as long as possible. Thats why

If the business in question contributes to the damage of our planet, they should try to find ways to counteract some of that, even if it's just by planting more trees in the park. Like our first poster said, they have to live here too. Eventually, there won't be anything left.

Because if they are not concerned, someone will sue them for damage done to their health or property. See Erin Brockovich movie, which, by the way, is based on a true story (the real Erin Brockovich appears in a small role as a waitress)...

Because the enviornment effects live styles. If you end up killing everyone no one can buy your products. Sorry but that is the short answer, and the lawsuits doesn't really seem to do anything to get tehm to care.
