MMS is sending a file.. not not necessarily a file.. but pics, videos, etc. ...
SMS.. is Short Message Service.. used for texting.. some texts can go as far as 190 charactars [that also goes with letters]

MMS is short for Multimedia Message service, which means you can send audio, pics, videos, etc. SMS is short for Short Message Service and is restricted to text/animation only.
