Red blood cells carry oxygen from your heart and lungs to the rest of your body. A high red blood cell count means your blood contains too many red blood cells, which can lead to clots. High values can be caused by:

Lack of oxygen, which can occur from living at a high altitude
Dehydration, such as from frequent diarrhea, excessive sweating or severe burns
Smoking
Exposure to carbon monoxide
Certain forms of heart disease
Scarring of the lung tissue (pulmonary fibrosis)
A rare disorder of the bone marrow (polycythemia vera)

True polycythemia (Polycythemia vera) can be caused by many things but the body simply produces too many RBC (Red Blood Cells) and often the treatment is simply removing some blood at regular intervals or by irradiating some of the bone marrow to reduce its profundity. A second condition is a short term polycythemia caused by dehydration and is treated by administering fluids
