Follow up with a phone call every so many days. Try saying: Hi my name is ___, I am calling to check the status of my application. Show up in HR and say this if the phone thing dosen't work. Sometimes people get to know you they'll move your application to the front ofthe line because it shows your interested. Anothe risky move I have done before is add, I would like to set up a time for an interview, what day is good for you?

I just applied to the University of Illinois a few weeks ago so I am having the same issue. Sometimes universities (such as U of I) list their openings along with contact people. I obtained a list and called the department I was interested in. This person in turn will call HR and ask specifically for you. This may be a risky move, hopefully you may have some connections to people who can "hook you up" or you many just come off as crazy. Either way they will either accept you or refer you to HR.

A note of encouragement, last week I was turned down for a spot to take the secretarial support exam. I e-mailed the person who turned me down , explained their must have been an oversight in my application review process and highlighted my experience. I then said: If I am not qualified for the postion maybe you can help me find a position where my education and skills can be utilized. Needless to say, I was allowed to take the exam yesterday! Good Luck!

Just be persistent and not pushy.

If you are in the UK do not do what Aletta suggests. I'm an Admission's tutor and I would curse you and your future newborns if you pestered me on the phone everyday. In fact, I'd jot your number down after the second time and ignore all future calls from you. Doing admissions is the university's butt crack of a job that always goes to the junior staff and we don't need stalking making it more annoying!

No, the only way you can influence your application is by writing a good application form, before you submit it

Not really, everything that you've ever worked for is in that application, so fingers crossed it will be enough.
