The cotton fibers become untangled and degreased when you wash the towel. When the towel dries in a stationary position the fibers become locked together and the towel feels stiff.
If you tumble dry the fibers are kept moving and do not become stuck together.
Conditioner lubricates the fibers and stops them sticking.
When you dry your hair you are separating the fibers by movement and adding lubricants in the form of shampoo, conditioner and excreted grease.

Put them in the airing cupboard whilst they're still a little damp.
Or tumble dry them.
I agree with the respondent above. Line dried towels (and all other washing) smells so good after being outside. But it can go crispy.
That fresh smells lasts forever though!
Much better than artificial smells. Passionfruit fabric conditioner for example....

I have never had that problem,my towels are always soft and fluffy.I wash my towels in hot water and Tide. Then wait for the rinse cycle and use Downy or Simple Pleasures fabric softner (the towels will smell soooo good even when you are ready to throw them in the dirty laundry).I also change my towels every 2 or 3 days for a fresh one.
"Airing-cupboard"??

I used to get that but I now chuck loads of conditioner in the wash, they are all soft and smell great wherever I store them.

Tumbling them dry (using a dryer) will make them fluffy. Air drying won't.

Don't use fabric conditioner. Try and dry them outside.
