Housekeeping. Pick a time when you won't need to use your computer, then run a spyware detecter on your hard-drive. They can be downloaded for free. Uninstall any software you don't use. Empty recycle bin, delete temporary internet files and cookies, open your email application and empty deleted items, sent items and any unnecessary drafts. Delete any files you don't need.

Then start hard drive defragmenter. This will take hours.
If you are feeling adventurous, carefully clean any dust out of your base unit. Be careful though, don't use standard housekeeping equipment. Get computer cleaning products from a good office supplies place. You will find good advice about this at the website below.

The last site is only if you are savoy enough to tweak your computer by the registry. ( Very Scary!)
But all this depends if you have windows or not. But any of these sites that have been given will be good.

Try a great program called 'TuneUp Utilities 2006' available from: http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/

This will not only clean up your system but also help tune it for maximum performance and fastest internet connection.

the only safe way to speed up your p.c is to install more memory, tune up utilities only speed up your p.c by sacrificing other parts of your p.c ,like desktops and s/savers,but the p.c soon slows down again(normally within 2 days)
internet speed is determined by your broadband connection and not your p.c so changing i.s.p (internet service provider)ia the only way to do this, some i.s.p have speeds up to 16m/bit ,but you will probally have to pay more for this
you can mess around with your p.c all day trying to increase its speed but the only realistic ways are 1)add more memory 2)upgrade graphics card to take pressure of main memory 3)upgrade your cpu.....check your p.c motherboard cpu socket for compattibility
good luck
