I used to be plagued by mestrual cramps every month. But as time went on and improved my diet, up to a week in advance prior to my menstration was due, I found that avoiding caffine, drinking lots of water and fruits and vegetables during this time really really helped with reducing and even totally preventing the cramps I once used to get. Study your diet and determine what changes you may need to make.

Take Tylenol (or other pain reliever) in advance. If you get cramps in the beginning, take a pain reliever right at the onset of the period. Also a heating pad or hot towel applied to the area will help. They now have "heating packs" sold at drug stores that attached to the area, they work great, I love them and they make life much more barable!

Talk to your doctor about birth control. It will decrease the amount of bleeding and almost eliminate cramping.

Be more active during and before your period. It really eases the discomfort for me. If not, take Midol!
