See, people do not believe me when I say Hollywood is the reason cultures around the world hate America...
Hollywood spends all their time promoting moral collapse and immorality, then get on soap boxes and scream at the public for doing some of the things they promote.
The 'short' answer to your question is NO, do NOT judge America by shows like Friends or God forbid, Desperate Housewives. Both of those shows are trash.
I can certainly understand how a lot of the world would judge a society by our entertainment... however for the most part the comparison is very flawed.
America does have problems with Pre-marital sex and marriage infidelity, however I would say LESS so than countries like France, Netherlands, England or even Germany. Those countries are MUCH more 'liberal and open' about sex.
The main thing to remember is that for Americans, Movies, Television and Video games are excapeism, a way to escape from 'reality' for a while... quite a few of us like to watch things that we would never do in our lives. Unfortunatly a side effect of this is what is called 'desensitisation' where society becomes less shocked when someone actully DOES do one of those things.
While there are people who act that way, most Americans find such actions disgusting.
However, if I were to pick a couple shows that accuratly showed american culture... (keep in mind that ALL shows have an element of fiction) here is my list.
1: "Smallville" (Minus the 'superpowers/superman' element of the show, this is a VERY good representation of American highschool.)
2: "Lost" (Minus the 'stuck on a creepy island' element of the show, this is a very good cross section of Americans... except Syheed who is Iraqi in the show.)
Both of those shows will give you a pretty good idea how 'most' people in america are.
As a comparison, let me tell you what 'we' see on the other side of the ocean about india... please do not be offended, I just want you to realize how 'entertainment' can not be accurate.
Hollywood has taught Americans that the Indian people are Nice, polite and generally quiet. You treat your men very well, however your women you subjugate and treat like lesser citizens... much like the middle east. Young girls are 'married off' to much older men, like a 13 year old girl to a 30 year old man. We also see problems with drugs, and corruption in government.
Keep in mind that 'hich school years' do not really start in the US till 16 or 17 for the most part... so in our minds there is a BIG difference between a 13 year old girl getting married to a grown man, and two kids in highschool kissing. Just because you hide pedophillia with marriage does not make is any less wrong.
Anyhow, that may or may not be accurate, but it is what the world 'media' has taught us... Id bet it is wrong, but how do I know?
Most Americans are kind, compassionate, moral, good and loving people, who believe in God.
However, there is a saying in our country "The Squeaky wheel gets the grease." Which basically means the people that are 'broken' make the most noise and get the most attention. The 90% of GOOD people just live their lives and try our best to ignore the bad people.
Addition: Most TV shows are 'designed' to make Americans buy things and spend our money, people have stopped watching commertials now, so they are assaulting us with advertisements IN our shows... people are also not watching TV as much because of this.

Try not to believe everything about the United States that you see in the media or on television. TV shows are comprised of FANTASY and have little basis in reality. Even the clean shows of the 1950's didn't accurately portray American life. It's true that our culture is more sexually open than many others, but we're also LESS open then say ... Sweden or Holland. From the view of those countries the United States is seen as conservative and repressed.
Advertisers and marketers for TV programming do a lot of research to dtermine what Americans would LIKE their lives to be like, and then format TV shows to appeal to American fantasy - TV is an escape, after all. While it's true that life imitates art and art imitates life, real people leading real lives would simply not have the time, energy, or inclination to perform all the antics we see on prime time TV.
The teen pregnancy rate has actually declined since the 1980's and there are many parents AND kids who adhere to traditional values and are opposed to premarital sex and extramarital affairs. The American culture as a whole is not represented by TV or movies, though the behavior in Hollywood where most media is filmed makes even liberals cringe.
Peace.

We speak in a rather strange way, you see it is NEVER the native language of the family. We also have holes in our roofs that let our pot/cigar smoke out, so not to harm any of us, you see we are very concerned with our health and it is a major part of our self being. When the eldest male son reaches 19 we all have a celebration which usually includes the peers and friends of the child. The man is then granted his card. The card holds a power that can't be matched by any mortal creation or being. It tells the person what they do with their life, me for example got helper, which signifies that I shall inform and teach others guiding them through their lives. The females experience similar ritual, they only get the card in the mail, no ritual. When we die, which, unless specified by our card, is at a minimum age of 75. I hope you have gained some knowledge from this experience.
If anyone tells you that Americans do not do this, they are not being truthful, which, if they are from the US, means that they got untruthful on their card. Or that they are outlaws and hate the Government.

Its all pretty much true. There are some exceptions of course. But a huge populations act like you stated and see nothing wrong with it. It all due to the emphasis that started in the 60s on indivdualism. Alot of people care more about feeling good and their needs over their family and others. Of course no culture is perfect. I have heard many horrible things about Indian culture as well, but I'm sure their are many Indians that dont do the horrible sick things I see on tv and read about on the net and in books.

Because it's. You most effective have got to seem on the "Super bowl last" final night time to look how distinct we're as a country. If we are having a last, its approximately the game, be it the FA Cup last, or say the World Cup last, it is all approximately who is going to win the name. In the US so much persons have been excited approximately the ads and the part time exhibit. We're not anything alike. Just given that we now have matters in normal doesn't suggest we now have the identical tradition. We devour the identical meals because the French too, does not make us like them both.

Hey Madboy,
American culture is not what you see on TV mostly. It is a mix of cultures from all over the world.
We have native Americans that are quite unique! Our ugly history of slavery still haunts our social relationships today.
Any kind of food, any kind of people mix in various climates and cities, country, and suburbs.
Truly a place to learn how to get along.
