The other answers are correct except they don't give you an example...Here it is...You bought 500 XYZ at a cost of $20 per share (I'll keep it simple...no margin interest...and no commissions) = $10000...You sold the XYZ later for $30 per share for proceeds of $15000...Your gross closing gain $5000...Congrats you made money on your transaction...NOW PONY UP YOUR CAP GAIN TAX, lol!!! a "position" is simply a stock holding. When you "close" a position, you sell your shares; "for a gain" = at a price higher than you paid.
