I have never heard this before but I will give it a shot. Sounds like a smart aleck way to refer to a demotion or some form of loss of status. A VIP is a Very Important Person. KP is army slang for kitchen patrol (I think). Watch an old army movie or an episode of MASH, KP was always considered punishment. Does this make sense in context? I lost my job during the dot com bust and had to flip hamburgers to pay the rent. I went from VIP to KP.

HTH (hope this helps)
