Someone with Melinoma takes Procrit every week in a shot form, and once a month a shot of B12 along with it. Is there any Supliment,or OverThe Counter,Herbs or Vitamins, Food, Drink, besides Diet, for Rasing the Blood Count, and if so What May Help. Can't get over 8.8 and have always been getting a transfusion to Recover, however this only lasts a month or so, before the process begins all over again. There's got to be something,a Medical person is not telling this person, or such. TIA.

First for a definitive answer, you have to explain a bit more. Is there rectal bleeding, vaginal bleeding, bruising (black and blue spots)....8.8 (I am assuming this is the hemoglobin level)...but what is the RBC (Red Blood Cell Count)?.....Without further data, I can only recommend foods high in iron (liver is excellent) a good multi-vitamin....few contain B-12. I assume that the person must have had either irradiation or chemotherapy and there is bone marrow suppression...so supplying the body with the building blocks of blood cells requires iron, and proteins...remember that iron is found in spinach and other leafy greens (not lettuce!)...the diet should be designed to stimulate interest in food (many patients lose their interest and lose weight from their inappetence). Vegetable juices such as V-8 are ok but if you have a blender, beets and spinach flavored with others will help. A bit of sunlight won't be bad (protect skin with sun block) as we make vitamin D which is part of the bone/marrow cycle. Do not resort to all the advertised ginseng/green tea/etc remedies...most have little to offer. If I can be of help...email me...

If you are taking Procrit, are you still on chemo? You don't say. I would be very cautious adding anything to what you are already on. Shots of B-12 are very potent. You may just have to wait till you are done with the chemo--you should start feeling better shortly thereafter. Supplements are not regulated by the FDA and therefore can have a lot of different reactions with prescription medications. Some are very serious. Talk to your oncologist about how you feel and see what they suggest.

Best wishes---

Your bone marrow was depressed by the chemotherapy and has not recovered. Sometimes it seems to take forever. No other treatment is indicated.

They may want to consider switching from Procrit to Epogen.
