Galileo used one to show that the planet orbits the sun as opposed to vice versa, that moons orbit other planets such as Jupiter.
Navally they are used to spot other ships etc. if you don't have radar.
If an Asteroid is on a collision course with us it will be spotted with a telescope.

Because it allows astronomers to observe and examine celestial bodies and events that otherwise would be invisible with the naked eye.

The ability to see farther and clearer is of high value economically and militarily. As for astronomical use, it is what changed astrology into astronomy, when people could look at the planets are realize that they were real worlds and not mystical beings.

because it was the first, (or one of the first), of so many inventions that have dramatically extended the range of our human senses. for compared to an eagle, even if you have 20-20 perfect vision, we are every one of us, woefully shortsighted.
