Lately, toast keeps getting stuck in our toaster and the smoke sets off the alarm. I said we should buy a new toaster but Dad insists the best way is to take the batteries out of the smoke alarm.

are you STUPID? If toast gets stuck in the toaster and is causing enough smoke to set off the fire alarm, then get a new damn toaster, it means your toaster is not working properly. Your smoke alarm may be a little over-sensitive but at least it does what it is supposed to. And if your toaster is causing your stuff to set off the fire alarm, maybe it could become a fire hazard.

And also, what would be the point of having a smoke alarm if you're not going to have batteries in it?

I would love to answer this question without insulting your father, but I do not think that it is entirely possible.

Your dad is right, if you take the batteries out of the smoke alarm it will stop the damn thing from going off every five minutes. However, at some point in the future, one of its warnings may be genuine and no batteries=no warning of a real fire.

Taking the batteries out of a smoke alarm is asking for trouble. Buy a new toaster. I have seen them for as little as 5 pounds. Don't be tight.

Yes I agree, buy a new toaster. One day you might regret taking the batteries out of the alarm but hey, a toaster is just a piece of machinery. Tell your dad he`s a lary, skinflint who can`t be bothered going to the local shop and buying one. Here`s an idea, why don`t you volenteer to go and get it for him.

Hmmm - buy the new toaster!! It's far cheaper than buying a new house after yours goes up in flames because the smoke alarms didn't work after you took the batteries out!

Dads are loveable morons. It sounds like the timer and/or springs on your toaster has/have gone funny. I agree with you - new toaster

fried bread that's the answer.
your dads right though but you should use this opportunity to show him how ingenious you are by setting fire to the curtains whilst having a cigarette and blaming the toaster when the house burns down.

Hmm, A quick fix with serious safety issues, or £10-20 for a new toaster.

I konw which one I'd pick. Extra burnt anyone?
