It should happen quickly after diagnosis if your medication is reasonably high, I lost about a stone very quickly after diagnosis, however I wasn't very overweight anyway and was walking for about 50 minutes each day to and from work. You don't say how heavy you are, and how long since your diagnosis and whether you were overweight at all before you were ill, so it isn't obvious whether the thyroid is the problem. If your blood tests show your thyroxine levels are back to normal with your medication, then probably this isn't the problem. But if not it may take some time. Either way you need to eat sensibly and get plenty of exercise.

I have an underactive thyroid and find it extremely difficult to lose week too. The only thing I can suggest is try to keep a healthy varied diet and try and do as much exercise as you can without making yourself exhausted!!!! As your thyroid medication reaches the correct level and everything starts working correctly you should notice the weight coming of!! Hang in there!!!

You're right, your under active thyroid will cause weight problems, the only way to deal with it without eating so few calories that you faint is to go to a gym where they have toning tables. Go at least once a week, and best of luck.
Also, see your g.p. to check they've got you on the right dose of Thyroxine. If the dose is wrong you'll gain weight.

I'm sorry but it can take ages. I have the same problem and just cant seem to shift the weight. I've taken up running and have a fairly active lifestyle and I even eat a healthy diet. The weight doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Don't give up though, I've heard of lots of people who have lost the extra weight, maybe one day we will lose it.

Some thyroid disorders can be cured, but many require lifetime treatment. Learn here https://tr.im/x7QvE
For example, sometimes early stage thyroid cancer can be cured by surgery to remove the thyroid gland, but you will need to take thyroid hormone medication afterwards for the rest of your life. Goiters can also be surgically removed and do not always recur after surgery. In most cases, thyroid disorders need treatment over a lifetime. However, with treatment most people with thyroid disorders can live normal, healthy lives.

One of the reasons why you put weight on is due to hypothyroidism which is underactive thyroid. I dont know how long you have been on medication. Once your underactive thyroid is treated satisfactorily with adequate dose of thyroxine you would eventually lose weight.
