countrys worldwide can listen and watch the BBC for free yet us in the uk are threatened with court action and in england imprisonment if we do not pay. there are many stations that are free since 1955 i.e stv and now free digital channels but the government has been forcing us to subsidise these people (BBC) for more than 50 years i believe it should be sold off and money returned to the people who they took it from i would like your reactions

I agree it is unfair, but most of what I watch is on BBC 2. I'm not sure whether what they say about things becoming more expensive because of the extra advertising the BBC would sell if it became like the other channels, but I wouldn't have a problem with the licence fee if it wasn't such poor value for money - I haven't got a digital receiver and I'm not sure there would be much more to watch if I did - the BBC spends too much money on large salaries, utter rubbish, programs I can't receive, and yet the cost is getting out of control. I think a sensible solution would be to shoot and replace all the people in power at the BBC and halve the fee.

I agree it is the strangest law in Britain. You need a licence to run a pub, have a gun, fly a plane, drive a car, but to watch TV? it sound absolutely ridiculous.

also have you seen what crap is spurted out on the BBC, a life of crime, to buy or not to buy, cash in the attic, city hospital, DIY programs and many other mediocre programs. They might as well rename BB1 The estate agent channel because that is all it is.

Over here, they're called 'tiers.' You can't just pick and choose what stations you want to pay for. You may get stuck with two or more tiers containing the stations you want, along with a bunch of crap you never watch. They spread them out like that so you'll have to pay for more tiers. It's called capitalism. Look at it this way, at least you can go to the doctor when you're ill. Millions in the US can't say that.

Thanks to the unique way in which the BBC is funded, we get a plethora of brilliant, compelling, challening and stimulating programmes and content on television, radio and the internet. All without invasion of advertising, sponsorship and the seemingly-irresistable progression of commercial interest into independent content.

We should be very proud of the BBC: it is the world's best broadcasting establishment. By far.

TV is mostly crap, I hardly watch it. BUT I still need a licence for the few decent programmes and the news.

Also I need my TV to watch DVDs.
Yet I pay the same as some brain dead couch potato watching Big brother crap 24 hours a day!

No, usually in the US, you just pay a price, and they give you a certain "package" of channels, you have the option to take any channel off, but there's no price reduction for it.

It doesn't necessarily depend on your country, but rather on the cable TV provider.

But if you're talking about forced to pay for cable TV itself, then that's a whole different story.

No, the same thing happens in the US
Example: PBS (public broadcasting system) is federally funded and a liberal biased joke...
Also, I pay 90 bucks a month for 225 cable channels, with 23 channels in Spanish, 2 in Tagalog, and 8 in Chinese/Japanese/other nees!!!!
