I live in Australia and have an account with Telstra's Bigpond - is that my service provider? Please help

You are correct. Your service provider is the company the provides you with the connections to the Internet. This is also known as your ISP (Internet Service Provider)

Yes, the ISP is the service provider.

You may use AOL, but you would still go through your service provider, unless you have a telephone dial-up account that connects you to AOL's services. You might prefer to use Yahoo! or Netscape or some other online service as your "home page" and primary mail site - but you would still need to get ON the Internet to do so.

The "service provider" is your primary source of actually entering the Internet - whether from a dial-up provider, a cable TV provider, a broadband service using your telephone service as a connection path (but not actually interfering with your telephone operation), or a "wireless" provider. There is now also a way to deliver Internet connection through electrical power supply lines!
