Dell has great prices on laptops. I have the 600m, but when I bought it laptops were quite a bit more expensive than today. Right now, I would get the D620. It's light, fast, and has all the bells and whistles you will need. It has the new Intel Core Duo processor and Nvidia graphics!
Whatever you chose, make sure you stay away from the Celeron processor if you can afford to. Also, try to put at least a gig of ram. Ram is fairly cheap and increases speed immensely. Good luck.

HEADS UP!!
if you buy a dell purchase it through a school or your job or somewhere else besides just as a consumer because if you have any problems and call tech support you will just be talking to someone in India or Manila
