I am starting a womenswear boutique and would like to eventually have an online shopping site. However in the mean time a holding page is fine. How do I secure my company name so I can have it printed on all stationary/ business cards?

You can get a supper package from eloquex.com, they will
1) Get the domain for you (u only pay what they paid for the name)
2) Holding page - they will design it for you as u wish
3) Multiple e-mail addresses - u will get 10 from them
4) Will host it all for you and provide the e-mails within the package

They are efficient, fast end very competitive, I have paid only £50 for the whole package and that's per year, true bargain
Got their name initially from BusinesLink in Cheltenham

If you have an idea of a specific name you wish to use in the future and want to make sure no one else can take before you are ready to use it, all you have to do is get in there first and register it for yourself.

The first thing you need to do is to make sure that no one has already registered the name you want. The best way to do this is to look it up in a whois register. Registrars usually provide this service free.

If it is already registered you will have to try another variation on the name to find one that is still available.

When you find a name that is available you then need to register it with a company that can park it for you until you are ready to use it, that is that they keep a record of your registration and direct any visitors to a holding page on their servers but you are not yet paying for a full hosting package that you may not require at this time.

When you have a site developed and are ready to put it on the Internet, either upgrade the parking to a hosting account or transfer the domain name to a new host that can provide the level of service you require.

I don't like to recommend specific companies but several have already been mentioned in previous answers.

I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I'd try them out first.

Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending & registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files.

There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I'm not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You'll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for "free domain name search" and "national yellowpages" and the appropriate links will pop up.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

I would be not go with registrar, simply because they are more expensive then a company buying from the same registrar in bulk. And u will get the same assurances and guaranties.
Also, I have been with Fasthosts, but mowed (will not slag any body) and at present enjoying very good and reliable service from other company already mentioned here.
