is 'media hype' necessary for the media?

Depends on viewpoint.
If you are part of the media ratings drive your actions, so the answer would be yes.
If you have a vested interest in the story itself, here again the answer is probably yes.
If you are an average person who has no vested interest in the outcome of a story the answer is no.

Media hype exists for 2 basic reasons.
1) Garner ratings
2) Advance an agenda

Necessary to whom? It's necessary to the media to get viewers/readers. The public as a whole would be better off with much less hype.

Definitely thats what creates the *buzz* factor absolutely at no extra moolaah; u bet its the marketers best source to create necessary demand for their services or issues that need response.
