If you're looking to "re-build" and learn something about combustion engines, I'd say look for an old american "muscle car", maybe a 68 Pontiac GTO or Dodge Duster, or if you're lucky enough to find one a 70-73 Plymouth Road Runner ot GTX.
You'll learn alot more and have a fun time doing it on a car you can actually work on with small changes, advancing the dwell angle and timimg, changing out the carberator, puttin' on some flow thru glass packs, etc. rather than just changing a computer chip in a jap car. And those cars had huge back seats, great for a teenager ;)

pretty sure teens should not be racing but just keep it on the track otherwise. Early 90's camaro or mustang, they make a wide variety of after market performance parts for these vehicles. Nitrous oxide is a start but expect to make drivetrain upgrades. Tires are a must, just make sure they have tread and not street slicks so i dont have to pull your *** out of my ditch when it rains. Remember weight is added time so dont load it down with gay speakers and what not. And be sure to have a good job or i'll be buying yur car at the repo lot ;). Just be safe, Ive seen to many wrecks with teens in them.

If it's for street racing NONE. Street racing puts all of us at risk. If you're serious about racing, there are all kinds of amatuer racing circuits available that allow teen racers. One of the most popular cars in the SCCA is the Mazda. It is cheap, the parts are readily available and the car is ridiculously fast. Go to your local race track and find out about the different types of races that run in your area and how to become affiliated.

Teens have no business behind the wheel of a race car.

1985 - 1993 5.0L or 5.7L Pontiac Firebird or Chevy Camaro, they're easy to modify, repair and maintain, they're a common car so they're easy to find at a good price, and they have a good reliable GM V-8 engine

Good luck

P.s. Please keep your racing on the track
